Olafsdottir Gros hoping to take UWCL thunder into Iceland 19s duty

Ahead of jetting off to Serbia to link up with the Iceland Under-19s for their Euro qualifiers, young winger Maria Olafsdottir Gros lifted the lid on life at Celtic so far and how she can take her new experiences into her international football.

The 18-year-old clocked up an assist in today’s opener against Sweden ahead of tricky tests against France and hosts Serbia, and the pacy attacker, who has already made six appearances in the Hoops, two of which in Champions League action, is hoping to make an impact in blue.

Joining back in July, she said she is loving life in Glasgow’s east end having settled in quickly, and while excited to catch up with her friends, she’s still excited for what lies in wait for her return.

“I’m really excited to meet all the girls and my friends and play with them because I think we are a really good team and we can do something big. I feel so good here though, and all the people here are so nice, so I’m looking forward to meeting my best friends but I’m also excited to continue being here,” she added.

Experienced in youth international football, Olafsdottir Gros knows they face stern opposition, but believes her side have more than enough to give a good account of themselves, and is hopeful her recent Champions League debut and constant learning curve in domestic football can benefit her performances.

She said: “They’ll be hard games, but like I said I think we can still go forward.

“I’m so happy that I got to play and experience the Champions League. It was a great opportunity and I’m just really happy about that.

I played totally different football in Iceland so I’m always getting more and more into how they play and understanding it more everyday, so as time goes on I understand it more and more.”
