New cup campaign is a welcome challenge, says Toland

Tyler Toland says Celtic’s League Cup win does give the squad further motivation to compete to clinch more silverware this season, and a Scottish Cup victory would see the young Irishwomen complete a personal hat-trick of Scottish honours.

Toland raised the SWPL1 title with Glasgow City last May whilst on loan from Manchester City, before seven months later getting her hands on the League Cup with Glasgow’s Green and White.

But the professional 20-year-old isn’t thinking about that as all her attentions are on the task at hand this weekend as the Hoops travel to Tranent to face Edinburgh City in their cup opener.

"We’re really looking forward to it,” she began, “we’ve been working hard these past two weeks since we’ve been in and really focussing on this game. It’s another trophy we can win and all focus is on the weekend and hopefully we can get the win.”

And ahead of her first Scottish Cup campaign after it’s absence in her time at Glasgow City due to it’s Covid-enforced suspension, the midfielder admits it is nice to return to action with a new tournament before getting back to league duty.

“I think it’s nice to get into a new cup having just won one before Christmas. It’s nice to start a new campaign now - it was good to get home and see the family, but the head’s back on the pitch now and I’m fully focused for the weekend.

“The knockout competitions have a different buzz from the league because it is winner takes all on the day and you need to show up, be determined to win and be professional,” she said.

And she hopes they can take inspiration from their last Cup run into Sunday and beyond.

Toland said: “It’s very important; it’s brought a good morale to the team and brought us a lot closer together and having that taste of success now, that is what we’re striving for and we want more.

“You treat every game as a cup final - we don’t know what to expect from this team but we’ll do our analysis so we just need to focus on getting that job done.”
