After a gruelling pre-season schedule packed with friendly and competitive action, Kathleen McGovern says she can’t wait to finally get the SWPL1 campaign finally underway.

With two League Cup and two Champions League matches under their belts, the Celts are well back in the way of competitive football, but with the league season just around the corner with a trip up to the SWPL2 champions Aberdeen, the 19-year-old says the side are raring and ready to go.

“It’ll be good to get the league underway. The mood in the camp is really good and hopefully we can go up there and get the job done.

“We’ve had some really tough games and obviously Champions League was tough mentally and physically, but all the girls are raring to go and we’re feeling fit, so hopefully we can get the job done,” she added.

In McGovern’s month-long loan spell at Hamilton Accies last season she earned herself an incredible goal of the season nomination with a terrific rocket from the wide area up at Aberdeen, earning Hamilton a crucial three-points in their promotion chase. And while Sunday’s hosts have made a couple of summer additions, the young forward already has a good grasp of the league newcomers.

She said: “They’re a very organised side and the manager’s got them playing really well. They’re really athletic and quite young as well, so they’ve got hundreds of energy in their squad so it’ll be a tough game I think.”

McGovern also touched on the Celts’ qualification for the SWPL Cup quarter-finals and an interesting draw for Fran Alonso’s side.

“It’s good. We’re happy to finish the group with nine points at and the top, and a derby is always good. We’ll play them back to back which will be interesting, but I love big games so we’re looking forward to it,” she added.
