A stoppage time screamer from Charlie Wellings secured a dramatic 2-1 victory for Celtic against high-flyers Hibernian.

The Hoops showed mental strength and their never say die spirit against Hibs – who sat top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 table before the match.

Celtic started the match brightly, keeping the majority of possession and trying to find a way through Hibernian’s defence.

Wellings had an early chance to open the scoring after her header went narrowly wide in the first minute.

The chances continued for Celtic with plenty of successful runs and well-placed crosses by Maria Olaffsdottir Gros and Tegan Bowie.

While Clarissa Larisey, Shen Mengyu and Wellings were on the end of the crosses, the Hibernian backline weren’t letting up.

Hibernian also had their own opportunities to score in the first half, but a well set up Celtic defence dealt with the pressure.

The Hoops returned to the pitch after half-time determined to break the deadlock and after 67 minutes of end to end attacking it was broken.

Sarah Harkes fired home from the edge of the box past an outstretched English into the side netting.

But ten minutes later, Hibs star player Colette Cavanagh’s long-range effort levelled the score line.

A tense few minutes ensued as both teams battled to find a game-winning opportunity.

Manager Fran Alonso made two late substitutes in an attempt to add a touch of freshness to the team, which paid off shortly after.

Kathleen McGovern played the ball through to a sprinting Wellings, who smashed the ball into the top left-hand corner in the 91st minute.

Celtic remain unbeaten in the league this season with two wins and a draw. They now look ahead to a busy week of league games against Motherwell on Wednesday and Partick Thistle on Sunday.

Celtic: Johnstone, Bartle, Clark, Bowie (McGovern), Harkes, Chance, Shen (Warrington), Wellings, Larisey (Jacynta), Hayes, Olafsdottir Gros (Donaldson).
