Match Report: Celtic draw against the Spartans

Sunday’s 2-2 draw against the Spartans means no movement for the Celts.

At the Penny Cars Stadium, there was late drama as Celtic recovered an important point against Spartans thanks to a last-minute goal from Charlie Wellings.

The Ghirls started confidently after Tegan Bowie’s early goal put them ahead, however this quickly changed after a Rosie McQuillan double left Fran Alonso’s side trailing until the last few moments of the game.

Within the first three minutes, Celtic took the game to their opponents, with Maria Olagfsdottir Gros challenging the Spartans defence with a corner and Jacynta forcing a save from Rachael Harrison.

A second save at the eleventh minute from Harrison however gave an opportunity to the celts as the ball dropped to Bowie who struck a low shot to open the scoring.

The excitement slowly faded as the Spartans responded immediately and were level within two minutes when McQuillan headed home a free-kick.

Celtic pressed on in quest of a second goal to regain their advantage, but the visitors struck next, and it was McQuillan who scored again, lobbing the ball over Chloe Logan to give her team a 2-1 half-time lead.

The Second-Half

As The Hoops pushed for an equaliser in the second half, Rachel Donaldson's chipped effort deflecting out for a corner and Olafsdottir Gros hitting the side-netting.

However Celtic thought their luck had changed, with a shot that struck the inside of the post, Bowie moved even closer to scoring her second goal. Unfortunately, the officials waved play on, even though the Hoops believed the ball had crossed the line.

Celtic, on the other hand, eventually received the reward for their efforts in the 93rd minute, when Charlie Wellings remained cool to run on to a through pass and slot it past the onrushing Harrison.

The Hoops had an opportunity to score the game-winning goal, but Izzy Atkinson's effort was brilliantly stopped by the Spartans goalie.
