Match Report: 4-0 win over Motherwell puts the Celts top

Tonight’s 4-nil win against Motherwell has put Celtic at the top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League table.

Manager Fan Alonso got what he wished for, three points and the team’s first clean sheet of the league season.

Two goals in the first-half from Charlie Wellings, an own goal from Rachel Donaldson’s cross and Clarissa Larisey’s first goal for the Hoops confirmed a third win in four games for Celtic.

It took ten minutes for a much-changed Celtic starting eleven to get into the flow of the match with Motherwell having a couple of half chances early on.

But as the ghirls got into the swings of things they began to look dangerous on the attack.

The Celts opened their scoring account with 15 minutes on the clock after Chloe Warrington’s cross found Wellings in the box, who tapped it in.

Motherwell had a few more chances at the Celtic goal but they were either defended away or confidently caught by Chloe Logan.

Wellings then scored her second of the night from a very similar range to the first - thanks to an accurate cross in from Shen Mengyu.

Celtic came back on the pitch after the break and were dominant from the outset, passing well and making runs down the wings.

Donaldson, Larisey and McGovern all had shots on target, testing the Motherwell keeper and defence.

It looked like it was going to be 3-nil in the 67th minute when a Motherwell defender Addie headed the ball off the goal line.

However, two minutes later the Celts were rewarded for their efforts and gifted a goal.

Donaldson’s low cross was deflected past the keeper by defender Addie’s tackle into the bottom left-hand corner.

With ten minutes left to play Larissa Clarisey claimed her first goal for the club as Chance’s free-kick was parried away by the keeper and found the Canadian who slotted the ball home.

Celtic have another fixture this week at the Penny Cars Stadium, taking on Partick Thistle at 2pm on Sunday.
