By Colette Carr

While just at the tender age of 18, new signing María Ólafsdóttir Gros is delighted to have a realised her childhood dream of becoming a professional footballer.

The winger arrived at Celtic Park from Thor KA in her native Iceland convinced that Celtic is the right club to take her first forays out of Iceland and into professional football at, saying Fran Alonso’s plans for the club sealed the deal.

“I had meeting with Fran and he was talking about the team and what they do, and I really liked it and I wanted to got to a professional club. It was my dream since I was seven and I thought Celtic was the right team to make that move and leave,” Ólafsdóttir Gros began.

The pacy winger made her first team debut at Thor KA at just 14 years old, and was quickly called into international action representing Iceland at Under-16s, 17s and 19s levels. But despite impressive experience for a player of her age, she admitted some slight nerves at her new challenge, but thanked the Celtic squad for their warm welcome.

She said: “I’m a little bit nervous because I’m a long way from home, but I’m also very excited. Everyone has made me feel so welcome and been so nice, so it’s been good.

“It’s really nice - eating before and after training together has been great, it’s so professional here and I really like it.”

While what lies ahead excites the teenager, she has a wise head on her young shoulders, as she explains she just wants to find her feet for now before kicking on.

“I’m really excited, there’s a lot of games which is great. I want to get used to the girls and playing here because in Iceland we play very differently, so my goal for now is just to adapt to life here,” she added.
