"It's what I've always wanted" Atkinson reflects on first month at Celtic

The return of the SWPL1 also marks four weeks since Izzy Atkinson first met her new teammates as mini-preseason began, and one month on, the Irishwoman can’t believe the anxieties she had coming in, beaming about how much she’s loved her time with the Hoops so far.

The teenager moved to Glasgow from WNL side Shelbourne to kick-off her professional career, a dream come true for Atkinson who hailed her teammates’ influence in her confidence on the ball and settling in.

“It’s what I’ve always wanted to do. I trained everyday on my own anway, but not with a team. I didn’t have that level of football fitness necessarily - everyday you wake up with a plan here, knowing I’ll be with all the girls and Fran’s sessions are planned out and it’s what I love.

“I feel like I’ve been here a lot longer than I have been, all the girls have helped me settle in so easily. I was nervous coming in and I look back and wonder why I was nervous.I was injured for a month and a bit before I came so I lost that bit of confidence, but with every session and the girls I’ve been getting it back.

“I was a bit more nervous because I hadn’t been training and coming straight into a very high standard, full-time everyday, but I feel like I’ve done well so far and going to keep pushing myself,” she added.

The visit of Glasgow City on Sunday could see the Dubliner make her competitive debut in the Hoops, and having always known of the reigning champions, she hopes Celtic will one day be the force in Scottish women’s football.

She said: “The game on Sunday would be some way to make my debut so I’m buzzing now.

“City have obviously won it 13 years in a row, and in Ireland when you thought of Scotland it was obviously Glasgow that you thought of first, but I hope soon it’ll be Celtic that everyone will think of first.

“I feel like I’ve a lot to prove to myself, the team and Fran and everyone back home, so I’m just buzzing to get going.”
