I'm very proud of our mentality says Alonso

Celtic manager Fran Alonso couldn’t have asked anything more of his players as they battled to win a hard-fought point against Glasgow City, but admitted he thought they were deserving of all three points.

Celtic were held to a 0-0 draw by the visitors with an emphatic penalty save from Chloe Logan keeping it level going into the break, but Alonso knew the enormity of the task they faced before kick-off, and hailed his side's attitude and performance .

“I wanted them to get the reward of the three points which they fought very hard for but to be fair we played against a team in as good form as ourselves and we knew it would be very difficult.

“I think we controlled the game quite well, and in terms of possession. Chances were quite even in that we both had good chances, so a draw is probably a fair result. I'm gutted for the players because I think they deserved more, but I'm very proud because they left everything out there.

“Everyone I have heard from has told me how proud they are of our performance.”

The manager also pointed to his side's steely never say die mentality that’s only growing in stature game by game, a quality that will be needed heading into the hectic schedule list, saying: “We've shown our mentality many times this season. We beat Rangers in the last ten minutes and rescued a point against Forfar in the two minutes with two goals, so we are mentally very strong.”

And while he reiterated he couldn’t have asked for anything more of his squad on the night, Alonso is already looking ahead to Hearts at the Oriam to get back to winning ways.

“It's not easy to create chances against them so I was very pleased and we cleared one off the line and Chloe Logan was outstanding at the penalty, so we worked very hard.

“I'm very happy with the attitude of the players, but at Celtic we don't celebrate draws, even if it is against the 13 times champions, so we are only a little bit happy,” he added.
