When Caitlin Hayes wrote her name into the history books by scoring Celtic FC Women’s first ever goal in European competition on Wednesday night, the centre-back couldn’t hide her joy as she brought the Hoops right back into the game against Levante.

And while the 25-year-old’s free-kick from deep inside her own half that bounced over the Levante keeper and into the net took everyone by surprise, Hayes, by her own admission, she couldn’t have been happier to see it cross the line.

Speaking ahead of Celtic’s Champions League match with FC Mink this Saturday, Hayes said: “I’d like to say that I meant it, but I’d be lying. I just hit it as hard as I could in all honesty, and I’m thankful for the result of it.”

While Celtic lost out narrowly 2-1 to their Spanish opponents, in what was their first ever Champions League game, Hayes and her team-mates appreciate the wider significance and importance of the week spent in Norway.

And it has only served to strengthen the resolve within Fran Alonso’s squad to ensure that they return to the competition next season.

“Taking Levante out of it, it’s an experience with my team-mates and it is one that is very meaningful,” Hayes explained.

'It’s a big occasion and to experience it with a good group of girls you can call your mates just makes it more special. We’re going to continue to embrace the experience of it and continue to enjoy it.'

“To stand up against any giant and to not be knocked over right away fills us with confidence, but there was a definite sense in the changing rooms beforehand that we weren’t going to be overshadowed or outmatched.

“Our strength was always going to match theirs, so I think that was more of a takeaway from the game in terms of, we weren’t the underdogs in our eyes, we weren’t going in with any less confidence than we usually do.

“It was a great moment and going forward we’ll take the experience and hopefully next time we’ll come out on top.”
