Fran Alonso: We're setting our sights on getting a Euro win

By Louise Gould

After an emotional ending to their first ever Champions League game, Celtic Women’s manager, Fran Alonso, said the team are more united than they’ve ever been ahead of Saturday’s match against FC Minsk.

That opening game saw Celtic narrowly lose 2-1 in Spanish side, Levante, and it was an impressive European debut for the Hoops though, ultimately, they were disappointed with the result.

Speaking ahead of the game, the Hoops boss said: “I’m looking forward to seeing how much stronger we’ll be tomorrow. I think we are going to see a team that is going to fight even harder if that’s even possible, as we are already very good at competing.

“We were able to compete against Levante, so in terms of confidence, we know if we can compete against them, we can do so against any team in the world.

“We are so excited to have another opportunity to leave Norway with a Champions League win, which is what we came here to do.”

But the manager said that FC Minsk are not to be underestimated. They are seven-time Belarussian Premier League winners, and have plenty of Champions League matches under their belt.

“The things we learnt against Levante we can put in practice tomorrow and get a win against a team that is very experienced in the competition,” Fran Alonso said.

“It’s only our second game, it’s all about growth and development - this is where we belong. It’ll be a 50/50 game. Hopefully we will be the best on the day and we will get the win.

“If we play our best football, we will give ourselves the best chance to win a Champions League game, which we all dream about.”

You can watch Celtic FC Women take on FC Minsk of Belarus at the Koteng Arena in Trondheim tomorrow (Saturday) live on Celtic TV* and Premier Sports.
