First full season real confidence booster for Kathleen McGovern

After netting 18 times in 2019 for the first team, Kathleen McGovern took her tally to an impressive 26 goals in 38 after opening her season account back in February with a perfect hat-trick against Dundee United.

And while still just at the tender age of 17, the Scotland under-19s star believes getting her first full season with the Premier side under her belt has been invaluable for her development and confidence.

“I think starting every week near enough being so young has really benefitted me,” the teenager began.

“I’ve learned so much off the experienced players in here, and from my performances at the start until now, I’m much more confident in myself and I’ve scored a few goals this season so that’s a positive too.

“There’s more training than what there was at development, and now with people like Keeva (Keenan) who are internationalists it’s so much harder, so I’m just always looking to improve myself,” she added.

Having only turned 17 midway through the campaign, McGovern’s maturity levels in understanding her development are admirable as she reflects on her season which seen her finish second top goalscorer and her time with Scotland under-17s and under-19s

“There’s been a lot of good games to play but obviously there are ones I feel I maybe didn’t have a great game, so it’s all about taking that into account as well when developing.

“Most people at Scotland are playing first team level, so it is as hard, but it’s always good to have that experience as well,” she said.

When asked if any of her 18 goals stand out, she nodded to one of her efforts against Rangers, but was also quick to discuss games she hadn’t scored in her season highlights as she already looks ahead to the new campaign.

“My goal against Rangers at K-Park. Being a Celtic fan, it does stand out because it means a lot in terms of the occasion and that whole game was a bit of a buzz, but even without me scoring, beating City is definitely a highlight as well,” she said.

“I just want to nail down my spot and take it by ear and see where my career at Celtic takes me now,” she added.
