English striker Charlie Wellings joins the Hoops

Celtic FC Women are delighted to sign exciting young English forward Charlie Wellings ahead of the upcoming season.

The young attacker brings versatility to Fran Alonso's options up top and said she can’t wait to see how she fits into Fran Alonso’s attacking Celtic.

Joining Bristol City after breaking into Birmingham City's first team at just 17, with whom she notably scored at Wembley, the 23-year-old also brings experience from the England youth setup, having won six caps and scoring four goals for the Under-21s, and winning the third place playoff in the 2018 Under-20s World Cup.

And the forward cited Celtic’s ambitions as the main driving force in making the move up north.

“The ambition of the club is definitely going in the right direction and I feel like it’s a fresh start for me, coming into a team that wants to win every game from one who didn’t do so well last year, but I think its a great opportunity for me to come away and get to know the girls here and crack on and try and score as many goals as I can,” she began.

“I’d say I’m very energetic - I love a good high press which Fran has said is a main part of his ambitions here and he wants to get a high press going so I think I fit into that quite well, and I like to run in behind as well, so I’m definitely looking forward to cracking on this season.”

Having met a number of Scottish players who made the opposite trip across the border, Wellings has a little knowledge of the Scottish league, but the opportunity to be a part of a growing league, and play in the Champions League, was too much to pass up for the forward.

“I know bits and bobs. I know a few girls who have come to England and they’ve said it’s getting better and better as the years go on so I wanted to be a part of it.

“The girls are really ambitious to get as far as we can in the Champions League and it’s a massive opportunity to get that on your record, so it’s a great opportunity for not just the club, but the girls too, so I’m really looking forward to it,” she explained.

And her extensive experience at major tournaments is another added bonus for Alonso’s new signing, who says she can’t wait to just kick on.

She said: ”I played at the World Cup, and it’s a massive thing to get that experience behind you in key games, so it’s key to then know what you need to do in certain situations you’ll come up against.

“It’s been a tough start after a break, but I’m finding my feet now and looking forward to getting more sessions under my belt and start playing games. I just want to be as clinical as I can really - I don’t really set myself goals but I aim to do as well as I can.”
