Disappointment for Celtic in SWPL1 return

Celtic's return to competitive action was a disappointing one, as they fell to a 3-0 defeat to the reigning champions.

The Celts weren't at the races as Colvill, Asgrimsdottir and Farrelly put the hosts to the sword.

With the blustery conditions disrupting both sides, the first half battle wasn’t always one for the purists. In the opening ten Celtic tried to find a way through through Mariah Lee, with Jacynta’s switch falling just too far ahead of her, before Lisa Robertson linked up with the American, but the angle was just too tight.

But ten minutes later, the visitors took the lead too the anger and frustration of the Celtic camp. A long ball over the top seen Chloe Craig race back alongside the onrushing Nicole Robertson, and having looked to have won the race to the byline, Craig appeared to be tripped inside her own box, but the referee waved play on and Robertson’s cross was turned in at the far post by Aoife Colvill.

The Hoops looked to enter the break on even terms with Lee breaking only to see the flag up, and Kelly Clark’s header from the corner nodded into Caitlin Hayes’ path, but Lee Alexander kept City’s lead intact.

Celtic’s intent from the restart was clear with Keeva Keenan providing for Jacynta on the left and Anna Filbey delivering into the area for Rachel Donaldson, but to no avail for the hosts. With just over 20 to go, Sarah Ewens tried to cut into the box after a tricky run, but found herself without support as she was shutdown by the City defence. Three minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead as Arna sif Asgrimsdottir finished from the corner, before Niamh Farrelly killed the game off with Glasgow’s third, leaving Celtic with work to do in the coming weeks.
