Alonso expecting tough Spartans outing

By Daylin Docherty

Fran Alonso is looking forward to another tough encounter in the SWPL1 as Spartans visit the Hoops on Sunday.

Alonso reflected on Celtic’s astonishing 10-0 win against Hearts on Sunday at the Oriam and how the Ghirls hoped to take that momentum into the next league game.

“This is the way we have to work. They know that applies to every single training session and every single game. It is about intensity and it is about heart.

“On Sunday, the girls got the message. We want to be intense in every single game. We have to be intense, we have to be aggressive. I am really happy with the intensity at training and application of the girls," he said.

It is a first competitive home game of the season for Celtic after away days at Glasgow City and Hearts to open up the new SWPL1 campaign and Alonso believes the Hoops will have to work hard to break down the Edinburgh side this weekend.

“It is a home game, so we have to try and get the three points and are expecting a very tough game. They were just beaten 1-0 against a tough opposition at the weekend, so they are going to be strong.

"They have played Hibernian and Rangers, so two very tough opponents. They are always difficult to break and aggressive, and are a team that defends very well, they try to hit on the counter. They will be tough but we will respect them," Alonso said.

The boss also expressed his disappointment that fans will still not be in attendance due to current COVID-19 government guidelines.

“We are gutted we won’t have our fans there, it means a lot to us to have our fans there.

“In the one game we did have our fans there (Glasgow City, February 2020) it was unbelievable. We really felt them in that game.

“The message to the fans is, the game is live on TV, so I hope they will be cheering from home and I am sure despite them not being there, we will feel them.”

The Hoops will hope to make it six points from nine in the league with the Glasgow Derby against Rangers coming up in matchday four of the SWPL1 campaign.
